Reality is Dull
Coloring a comic set in the world of JAWS isn’t as simple as selecting colors right off the screen. You can see that, when you isolate the film’s realistic color palette, it feels quite dull. To create an exciting and emotional color palette for the book, I was going to need other inspiration.

Mood Board
Mood board is a grouping of images an artist brings together to visually represent the style of a project. I created a mood board of icons and art from the 1970s to help me find the right colors for Shark Summer.

The original 1970s cast of Sesame Street inspired the way I used color to express the identities of the kids in Shark Summer.
The Kids’ Colors
Here are the color schemes for each of the book’s main characters. By placing the four color schemes next to each other I can determine how effective they are. Try and picture the colors for Superman and Batman. Like their personalities, their colors are drastically different. If a cartoon character can be identified by their colors alone that’s a good sign.

This painting by Thomas Cole inspired the color mood for the climatic storm scene at the end of Shark Summer.
